How to Care for Custom Printed Apparel —
The Complete Guide to
Making Prints Last for Years.
Custom printed apparel is an investment in your brand. Here's the exact care guidance that makes screen prints, DTF transfers, HTV vinyl, and sublimation prints last as long as the garment itself.

Custom printed apparel is more durable than most people assume — and more fragile than most people treat it. The difference between a screen print that looks sharp after three years and one that cracks after three months comes down almost entirely to how it's washed.
This guide covers the specific care instructions for each of the four printing techniques Inkcora uses, with the practical reasoning behind each recommendation.
Universal Rules for All Printed Apparel
- Wash cold, always: Hot water breaks down the adhesive bonds in DTF and HTV transfers and causes screen print inks to crack prematurely. Cold water (30°C / 86°F or below) is the single most impactful care choice.
- Turn inside-out before washing: Reduces friction against the printed surface during the wash cycle. Particularly important for DTF and screen-printed items where the outer surface carries the design.
- Gentle cycle for decorated items: High-spin cycles create mechanical stress on print surfaces. A gentle or delicate cycle significantly extends print lifespan.
- Air dry or low heat: High dryer heat is the second most common cause of print degradation after hot water washing. Air drying is ideal; tumble dry on low heat is acceptable for most techniques.
- Never iron directly on the print: Applies to all techniques. If ironing is necessary, turn the garment inside-out and iron the reverse side.
Care by Technique
Screen Print Care
Screen-printed cotton apparel is the most wash-durable of all print techniques when properly cured during production. A correctly cured plastisol ink on 100% cotton can withstand 100+ wash cycles without significant degradation.
The primary failure mode for screen prints is cracking — caused by high heat during washing or drying, or by washing new prints too aggressively in the first few cycles. For the first three washes, use cold water and air dry. After that, the ink is fully set and the standard care rules apply.
DTF Transfer Care
DTF transfers are highly durable when properly applied and cared for — 50+ wash cycles is standard, and well-maintained DTF prints can last considerably longer. The critical care rules: cold water washing, gentle cycle, inside-out, and air dry or low heat tumble dry.
Avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets on DTF-printed items. The chemical compounds in these products can break down the transfer adhesive over time, causing edges to lift or peel.
HTV Vinyl Care
HTV vinyl is the most durable decoration technique when it comes to color retention — the pigment is part of the vinyl material itself rather than an applied ink. The vulnerability of HTV is at the edges, where peeling can begin if the transfer is subjected to excessive heat or abrasion.
Never iron directly on HTV. Never put HTV-decorated items in a hot dryer. For sports uniforms worn and washed frequently, cold water and air drying extend HTV life significantly beyond what hot washing and machine drying produce.
Sublimation Care
Sublimation is the most wash-resistant of all techniques because the design is part of the fiber itself — there is no surface layer to crack, peel, or lift. Sublimated performance wear can be washed as frequently as the fabric itself tolerates, which for high-quality polyester means hundreds of cycles with no print degradation.
The limitation for sublimation care: avoid high heat, which can cause the dye to migrate or spread slightly. Cool or warm washing and tumble dry on low are the recommended settings for sublimated garments.
